The bag time on the package is a starting point, not a rule. The correct stopping cue is acoustic: stop the microwave when pops slow to roughly one every 2-3 seconds, not when they have stopped entirely. By the time pops fully stop, a measurable fraction of the kernels at the bottom of the bag are already scorching.
The listen method works because popcorn pops in a tight time window — the rate accelerates from a slow start, peaks for 30-45 seconds of rapid popping, and then tapers off as the remaining un-popped kernels run out of moisture. The taper is where burning starts. Pulling the bag at the taper transition produces a fully popped bag with minimal scorch and few unpopped “old maid” kernels.

Stovetop popcorn — kernels with oil in a covered pan — takes 4-6 minutes total over medium-high heat. Add 1/4 cup popcorn kernels and 2 tablespoons oil to a heavy-bottomed pan, cover, and shake occasionally. Pops begin at 2-3 minutes and finish at 5-6 minutes. The same listen-for-pops rule applies. Stovetop produces a noticeably crisper, fresher-tasting result than microwave.
