Duke University’s Academic Resource Center endorses both the standard 25/5 cycle and a 52-minute/17-minute variation, advising students to experiment based on energy levels. Whatever block length you pick, keep the four-round structure and a long break afterward. Start a 45-minute timer for deep blocks, or stay at 25 minutes when the material is shallow and easily chunked.
Reading and problem-solving fail under the same interval, so set them differently. Treat the two as separate categories with separate rules.
Dense reading rewards a 45/15 block because comprehension builds across paragraphs and a 25-minute cap often cuts you off mid-argument. Chunk the assignment by pages, not minutes: target a fixed page count per block, then close the book and write three sentences summarizing the section from memory. For lecture review and flashcards, the 25/5 classic works better because the material is already broken into small pieces.
Problem sets reward a 50/10 block because multi-step solutions punish interruption; losing your place on a proof or a coding bug costs 5 minutes of re-orientation every restart. Group three to five small problems into one block, attempt each without checking the answer key, and mark the ones you miss for a later block. Skip self-checking until the block ends so you never break the indivisible 50 minutes.
Timing organizes your attention, but it does not memorize anything for you, so spend the blocks on the two techniques that learning science rates highest. In a 2013 review of 10 study methods, Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed practice as “high utility”, generalizable across ages, subjects, and ability levels. They rated rereading and highlighting as “low utility,” the very habits most students default to inside a study block.
