Most timer apps drift. The mechanism is well-understood. Naive implementations use setInterval or setTimeout to fire a callback every N milliseconds, then decrement a stored counter. The problem is that these JavaScript scheduling primitives are not real-time guarantees. They are minimum delays. If the event loop is busy — another tab is consuming CPU, the device is throttling background tabs, garbage collection runs, or an animation frame is contested — the callback fires late. Over a 25-minute session, even a few milliseconds of drift per tick can accumulate into tens of seconds of error.
The fix is straightforward: store an absolute end timestamp when the timer starts, then on each tick, compute remaining time as endTime - Date.now(). This is how The Blog Timer works. The visible countdown is always anchored to the system clock, so even if a callback fires late, the next callback corrects the display. This eliminates the rounding error that compounds in naive implementations.
The second source of error is rounding direction. If a timer displays whole seconds but updates 10 times per second, rounding the remaining time consistently down can cause the display to flicker by a second at boundaries. Better implementations use Math.ceil for the displayed value (so 5.01 seconds shows as 6, not 5) which matches user intuition: a timer set for 5 minutes should display "5:00" the entire first second, not transition to "4:59" immediately.
Five minutes is the standard Pomodoro break and the most common stretching, mindfulness, and transition interval.
